| | Movies by Burswood and Moonlight Cinema in Kings Park both show blockbuster films and are a great place to grab a patch of grass for an evening of entertainment beneath the stars. Monday and Tuesday nights are a bargain for students at Burswood – tickets are just $6. At Moonlight, group bookings are a great way to save – organise a group of 20 friends and everyone can enjoy a discount. For those who love arthouse, Luna Leederville and PIAF’s Lotterywest Festival Films (more on PIAF below!) have a range of independent and foreign films showing in intimate outdoor settings. For PIAF, the films screen in two locations, the pines of Somerville Auditorium and Joondalup, and student tickets are only $11. Music Festivals “Did you see the Big Day Out lineup?” “I just have to see The Killers” “John Butler is so amazing in concert…” Every summer, music festivals are the talk of the town. And each year the list of festivals and can’t-miss acts get longer – Southbound, Blues & Roots, Good Vibrations, Big Day Out, Future Music, Soundwave, Summadayze, Breakfest, RockIt, Laneway Festival… the list goes on and on and on. Of course, the money doesn’t always stretch quite so far. In order to see the festivals without going broke, we have a few helpful hints: - Work the festivals! If you have hospitality experience, a lot of festivals need extra workers. Check the sites and put your name down to work. Not only will you save the cost of a ticket, you’ll make a few dollars!
- Buy tickets early. Plan ahead for the festivals you most want to see and buy tickets early to get an early bird discount. For festival maniacs, buying early for 3 or 4 festival can add up to saving as much as $100.
- Event-u-Lator! To help track your spending and make sure you get to the gigs you most want to see, try out this handy budgeting tool.
- Enter to win. Finally, take advantage of the great comps that Student Edge wins by checking out our Win Free Stuff page. We’ve already given away tickets to One Movement, and we have more coming for Southbound, Laneway, Origins, Breakfest and a few still to be announced.
More Music The big festivals aren’t the only place for top music. Perth’s local scene is always jumping and jiving. After all, before they were stars, John Butler, Eskimo Joe and The Waifs all played on the local scene and entry was just a few gold coins. So, get out and check out what’s happening at local live venues – you never know when you might catch the next hot act before anyone else. Another option for great music is to picnic outside the fence. While you may not be front and centre, you can still catch the vibe and tunes at venues like Fremantle Arts Centre and Kings Park for free by rocking up with a picnic basket and a blanket and sitting outside the fence for a listen. PIAF One of the best values in summer fun is the Perth International Arts Festival (or PIAF). Every year, PIAF brings big name artists, like Cate Blanchett who performed some Shakespeare last year, to Perth. They also sponsor some amazing free events. Their website allows you to plan which events you want to go to and even has a dedicated “free event” section. Here are just a few of Student Edge’s top PIAF freebies: - Beck’s Music Box After Parties – a big free dance party at the Esplanade to open and close the Music Box.
- Lotterywest Festival Celebration – a spectacular performance of daredevil stunts at the Supreme Court Gardens.
- Jeppe Hein – a water exhibit that involves a fountain spraying jets of water, both fun to watch and a great way to cool off outside of PICA.
- The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy – a magical tale of a fondue tragedy turned into a good story at the Subiaco Arts Centre.
- Haircuts by Children – a free haircut, the only catch, you have to trust children to cut your hair!
Places to Hang One of the best things about summer is the chance to take a well-deserved break from classes and just chill out. Few cities in the world have as many great places to hang out as Perth. Here’s a few ideas for where to spend good time with great mates. - Beach – From Cottesloe to Scarborough, surfing to sunbathing, the beach just can’t be beat for a day out.
- Kings Park – Grab some friends and some snacks and chill out on the grass.
- The Foreshore – You can get active by cycling or rollerblading or you can just veg on the foreshore and watch the boats pass by.
- Fremantle Markets – In summer, buskers fill the street with music while stallholders provide plenty of shopping entertainment.
